Safeguarding the Gaming Experience from Online Threats

22 July 2024

Gaming has become integral to everyday life for many, offering fun experiences and camaraderie. However, it also poses risks, such as cyberbullying and data theft.

A Ministry of Communications and Information (MCI) survey revealed that 36% of Singaporean youths playing online games interacted with strangers, sharing personal information, while 17% faced in-game bullying. From TDCX’s insights for a global gaming company, trash talk and trolling are also common issues, with 63% of gamers reporting trash talk and 46% facing trolling.

In a recent article, Rob van Herpen, TDCX’s VP of Global Client Solutions, emphasizes the importance of gamers being aware of practices for safe online experiences. Such practices include avoiding engaging with disrespectful players and muting or reporting them for abusive behavior. Effective reporting channels are crucial, and TDCX’s insights reveal that 65% of players prefer quick support via live chat and Discord. Despite advancements like AI tools and moderators, gamers must still report misconduct to foster a safe environment.

Additionally, there is also the significance of recognizing emerging threats like deepfakes, which manipulate and harass individuals. Rob highlights the 3A approach (assess, analyze, and authenticate), which helps gamers identify fake content. Educating others about online safety, responsible gaming, and mental health is essential for a secure gaming environment.

By championing online safety and collectively implementing best practices, we can create welcoming spaces where all gamers feel respected, empowered, and free to enjoy their favorite games.
